Review: Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic Watches
In 2016, Panerai introduced their new Radiomir 1940 watches. Panerai Radiomir watches are known for their clean and easy-to-read dials, and these new models are no different. Panerai puts telling time first, and that’s something that many watch buyers appreciate.
In particular, I’m interested in the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic Acciaio and the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Power Reserve Automatic Acciaio.
Appearance
Both models are 45mm in diameter with a polished steel case, bezel, crown, and buckle. The crown includes Panerai’s classic OP personalization. The black dial is finished with a Paris Hobnail design to give it a unique, yet understated, appearance, and the beige hour markers and hands stand out against the black background. As for straps, buyers have the option of a black or dark brown leather strap.
To make the time accessible in both low light and complete darkness, Panerai uses Super-LumiNova to illuminate the hour markers, indices, and the sub-dials. The large Arabic numerals are easy to read both in normal lighting conditions and in complete darkness.
Features
Both models offer the following features: hours, minutes, small seconds, date, and GMT 24 hour indicator. The primary difference comes from the power reserve indicator, as the model names suggest. The Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic Acciaio provides the power reserve indicator on the back of the watch whereas the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Power Reserve Automatic Acciaio includes the power reserve indicator at 5 o’clock.
Both offer the information, so your decision lies on your preference for the dial. If you’d prefer a cleaner dial, then I suggest you choose the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic Acciaio. If you’d rather have all of the features and information front and center, then you may prefer the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Power Reserve Automatic Acciaio.
Movement
The P.4001 calibre for the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic Acciaio and the P.4002 calibre for the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Power Reserve Automatic Acciaio are both self-winding movements created entirely by Panerai. These movements have 278 components, including an anti-shock device. They can run for three days without needing to be wound. Both watches offer a see-through sapphire crystal caseback, so you can watch the movements at work.

The suggested retail price for the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic Acciaio is 11,700 USD. With a suggested retail price of 11,900 USD, the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Power Reserve Automatic Acciaio is 200 dollars more expensive.
